Abstract
Purpose: To estimate future demand for nursing homes and home care services by Koreans, the intention to use nursing homes and home care services was estimated, and the underlying influencing factors were explored.

Methods: Data from the Korean National Survey of Long-Term Care Need in the Elderly compiled in 2004 were used, and 3,019 people aged 65 and older for whom complete data were available were sampled. The following influencing variables were selected based on Anderson¡¯s behavioral model of health service use: predisposing factors(age, gender, marital status, education), enabling factors(family income, number of children, place of residence), and need factors(self-rated health, ADL, IADL, MMSE, comorbidity).

Results: The result shows that, of all the participants, 29.7% intended to use nursing homes, and 45.7% intended to use home care services. Multivariate analysis revealed that younger age, more education, fewer children, and urban residents were significantly associated with the intention to use nursing homes. On the other hand, the intention to use home care services was associated with younger age, lower family income, and rural residents. Conclusion: Our results will contribute to the development or reformation of long-term care systems in countries with ageing populations.
